Initiative Espaces Positifs (IEP) de OCASI vous invite a un webinar avec Mamane Samri pour échanger et discuter de la notion de dignité pour les personnes immigrantes au Canada.

Lorsque nous abordons la notion de dignité, nous reconnaissons que chaque individu, peu importe son origine ou son statut migratoire, mérite d'être traité avec respect et considération. Les personnes immigrantes font souvent face à des défis uniques lors de leur intégration dans un nouveau pays, et il est essentiel que nous soyons sensibles à leurs expériences et à leurs besoins.

En sensibilisant à l'importance de la dignité pour les personnes immigrantes, nous favorisons une société plus inclusive et équitable. Cela signifie reconnaître et valoriser la diversité des cultures, des langues et des parcours de vie des individus qui choisissent de s'installer au Canada. En embrassant cette diversité, nous enrichissons notre tissu social et renforçons notre compréhension mutuelle.

Bibliographie du conférencier:

Mamane Samri est titulaire d’un Master en biologie à l’Université d’Abomey Calavi, au Bénin et d’une Licence en Technologie Alimentaire à l’Université Catholique de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (UCAO) au Burkina Faso. Aujourdhui Mamane est doctorant en santé communautaire à la Faculté des sciences infirmières de l’Université Laval et consultant en santé publique. Ses recherches portent sur l’humanisation des soins et l’engagement des patients dans le système de santé. Il s’est toujours intéressé aux études décoloniales et aux populations racisées et racialisées. Frantz Fanon, quelles leçons peut-on tirer de ses œuvres dans nos sociétés contemporaines ? ou en encore Interroger le concept de la dignité dans l’engagement des patients : jeter les bases d’une collaboration humaniste, sont les titres de quelques-unes de ses communications récentes.

Date: December 1st, 2023
Time: 12 - 1:30pm EST

This webinar by Rahim Thawer will draw on academic literature, personal lived experience, and community organizing work with two queer Muslim groups based in Canada. We will unravel the tensions that affect the mental health of 2SLGBTQIA+ Muslims, including managing homophobia and coming out, reconciling sexuality and faith-based identities, both being critical of Islam and fighting Islamophobia, seeking and creating affirming spaces, acculturating as asylum seekers and Canadian-born 2SLGBTQIA+ Muslims, and religious-cultural factors affecting access/understanding of mental health services. There will be a Q&A period at the end of the session.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Examine the religious, cultural and political diversity among Muslims across the globe
2. Articulate various meanings of what it means to be a queer or trans Muslim
3. Consider unique needs of this minority that exists within a minority
4. Explore the intersection of homophobia, transphobia and Islamophobia

Rahim Thawer (he/him) works as a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, facilitator and public speaker, sessional lecturer, writer, and community organizer.

Challenging Conversion Practices

OCASI-PSI is excited to host guest speakers from the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) who will examine the understanding of conversion practices and their impacts on immigrant queer and trans youth in Canada and how it extends globally through an intersectional lens. Attendees will receive an overview of Bill C-4, the new federal bill on conversion practices and the offences under this new bill. They will also unpack the limitations and the gaps of Bill C-4, particularly on how it impacts racialized and immigrant queer and trans youth. This session will be informed by the CCGSD's newest project in partnership with the Canadian Department of Justice, titled Challenging Conversion Practices.

Through reflection questions and interactive activities, attendees will have an opportunity to reflect on ways to support immigrant and refugee youth within their respective spaces. By the end of this webinar, participants will better understand the impact of conversion practices on immigrant queer and trans youth in Canada and globally through an intersectional lens. They will also be equipped with strategies to support their clients and identify how organizations like the CCGSD can support them. There will be a Q&A period at the end of the session.

When LGBTQI newcomers arrive in Canadian cities they encounter an often confusing range of social attitudes, from open celebration and expectations to be out, loud and proud through intolerance, discrimination and threat. Their efforts to rebuild lives--find housing, search for jobs and meaningful work, form new relationships and belong, are complicated by the combined and intersecting impacts of racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. How can we support LGBTQI newcomers to navigate this complex terrain?

This webinar presents examples of some common struggles LGBTQI newcomers face, and explores them through the lens of ethical care. We underline the importance of upholding ethical commitments to respect self-determination, protect the right to confidentiality and privacy, and to offer competent care.

Tatiana will first review data from Trans PULSE Canada Report to share insights about Trans and Non-binary newcomers to Canada. The second part will be a candid discussion about resettlement and finding & building community by, for, and with Trans and Non-binary refugees, im/migrants, and newcomers. Tatiana and Sizwe will talk about identity, programs and supports, and why we need more Trans-led newcomer spaces. There will be a Q&A period at the end.
